The 1994 WSM was the first time that I saw Manfred. I had heard a lot about Magnus Ver Magnusson, but here was a guy who looked like some cartoon character with freaky arms, giving Magnus a run for his money. In fact, the two were tied going into the last event (Atlas Stones) and Magnus beat him by just 7/10 of a second!
In 1995, Manfred was in a serious car accident and fractured his hip. He has recovered and was going to compete in the 1997 WSM, but he snapped his bicep (ouch!). Had he not been in the accident, I know that he would be dominating the sport right now and we would all be saying "Magnus who?" : )
